bestUV systems for cosmetics industry in Eastern-Europe

bestUV was again awarded for delivery of several bestUV systems for a cosmetics company in Eastern-Europe.

The bestUV systems, integrated in the water treatment loop, are used for the following purposes e.g.:

  • disinfection
  • deozonation
  • dechlorination
  • TOC reduction

All applications require their own specific UV dose (mJ/cm2) to be effective. UV for the disinfection process is totally different from the other processes. For breakdown of ozone (O3), free chlorine (HOCl/OCl-) and Total Organic Carbons (TOC) a much higher UV dose is required compared to disinfection and in some cases different combinations of UV lamps and quartz sleeves are required.

Besides bestUV’s decades of application knowledge, a very important strength of bestUV is the possibility to customize the bestUV systems according to the endusers’ requirements. The bestUV systems follow the highest standards in cosmetics and pharmaceutics industries, such as, but not limited to:

  • hygienic tri-clamp connections,
  • hygienic construction,
  • material certificates 3.1 acc to EN 10204:2004

Hotel pool uses bestUV systems

From its succesful range AlfaLine UV, bestUV delivered UV systems for treatment of several children pools.

Treatment of children pools is both important and difficult. Important, because of the sensitivity of young children for chloramines (bounded chlorine) and difficult, because young children create high amounts of chloramines in swimming pools.

Based on many years of practical experiences and comparisons of many results, bestUV developed its own ‘Code of Design’ (CoD). The CoD combines several pool parameters and the use of bestUV’s own UV lamps.

Besides low amounts of chloramines in water and air, the bestUV systems also provide lowest operational costs for the pool.

Young children enjoy healthy pool water and air

Dutch UV manufacturer bestUV again succesfully runs with several UV systems in a public swimming pool. The result is: improved, pleasant and healthy air without ‘chlorine smell’.

The bestUV systems have remarkably effects on the air in the indoor swimming pool. This is important as young children enjoy to play in paddling, toddlers and whirlpool.

The amount of bounded chlorine is below 0,20 ppm, meaning that the level of bounded chlorine follows the strict german regulations DIN 19643-1(5.3.16) of max. 0,20 ppm of combined chlorine.

It is very important for young children to prevent exposure to high amounts of chloramines, especially trichloramines (TCA). Many international reports confirm the health risks of exposure to trichloramines at young children.

The bestUV systems are equipped with special UV lamps. The lamps are unique, emit the specific wavelengths to breakdown a.o. trichloramine.

Single wavelength, low-pressure (LP) UV lamps, are not used as the germicidal wavelength of 254nm, is not effective to breakdown trichloramine by direct photolysis.

It is obvious that young children, their parents and the staff feel very comfortable in the several pools treated by bestUV units. The result is a pleasant and above all healthy pool air where visitors want to stay and return.

New-built aquaparc uses bestUV units

Several bestUV systems were installed in one of the latest new-built aquaparcs in Europe. The new constructed aquaparc is officially opened in the begin of 2012.

Dutch manufacturer bestUV, leading in UV units for swimming pools, was selected by the contractors because of its wide range of references, proven effects and high quality products with lowest operational cost.

In the new-built aquaparc the bestUV units are used in:

  • 25m pool
  • 50m Olympic swimming pool
  • toddlers pool
  • recreation pool
  • salt water pool
  • whirlpool

All pools are equipped with bestUV systems including specially developped bestUV lamps, UV sensor technology and cleaning device to prevent fouling of quartz sleeves.

Salt water pool

Especially the UV unit for the ‘salt water pool’ is confirming again the innovative strength of bestUV. The salty pool water is highly corrosive to the material normally used in pool water. After many years of testing in comparable situations, bestUV is able to provide a high quality low-cost solution for UV pool units, resistant to highly corrosive warm salt water.

German DIN

The bestUV systems are following the new draft (May 2011) of the German DIN 19643-2:2011-05 chapter 4.5.5. The DIN allows the use of specific medium-pressure UV lamps only.

Medium-pressure UV lamps for discharged waters

Ultraviolet (UV) light has become widely accepted as an alternative to chemical disinfection (e.g. chlorination) of water. Although it is believed that all UV lamps (LP and MP) act the same, there are reasons to assume that both lamp technologies act differently. These different effects are thoroughly studied in practise and in science.

This document describes the background of different actions on micro-organisms by the two major lamp technologies:

  • low-pressure UV lamp (LP)
  • medium-pressure UV lamp (MP)

The document is very interesting, especially for applications where water is exposed to visible (sun)light ater UV-treatment, such as:

  • communal waste water (after discharging)
  • ship’s ballast water (after deballasting)

It is concluded that the broad-spectrum of wavelenghts, emitted by medium-pressure (MP) UV-lamps, result in multiple effects on the microbiological cell. These effects are especially of interest with regard to the theme of ‘photorepair after UV-treatment’. Photorepair can take place immediately after exposure to visible (sun)light. This is an issue when water is discharged into ‘open waters’ like river, lake and/or sea. The conclusion of the studies is that medium-pressure (MP) lamps are favoured to prevent repair of the UV-exposed cell.

bestUV units in aquaparc

Several bestUV systems were installed in one of the largest aquaparcs in Europe. The newly constructed aquaparc was officially opened in 2010 and consists of a.o. 25m pool, several bubble and wild water baths, children’s pools and water slides.

All pools are equipped with bestUV systems including specially developed bestUV lamps, UV sensors and cleaning devices to prevent fouling of quartz sleeves.

The specially developed bestUV lamps* create a double effect, as they emit wavelengths for disinfection of water and for reduction of combined chlorine in the water.

The disinfection by UV light is important as it:

  • reduces dosing of free chlorine
  • reduces formation of disinfection byproducts
  • kills chlorine resistent microorganisms

The breakdown of bounded chlorine is important as it:

  • reduces bounded chlorine in the poolwater
  • reduces the supply of fresh water by
  • improves the environment in the pool

The overall results, after over 1 year operation of using the bestUV systems are healthy and pleasant pool water and pool air. More visitors (especially children) enjoy the pools and come back. A quick return on investment.

*The bestUV lamps are following the new draft (May 2011) of the German DIN 19643-2:2011-05 chapter 4.5.5. The DIN allows the use of specific medium-pressure UV lamps only. Above described aquaparc is thus equipped according to the newest German DIN.

bestUV systems for safe drinking water

Dutch manufacturer bestUV was selected to supply two ultraviolet (UV) systems for a communal drinking water plant in Europe.

The purpose of the bestUV systems is to protect the local citizens against potential pathogens in the drinking water. The UV dose applied is based on local requirements of at least
400 J/m2 (at the end of lamplife).

BestUV systems were selected because of the compact size, robust construction of the UV reactors and cabinets and shown references.

The bestUV systems include strong adjustable medium-pressure (MP) UV lamps and are equipped with integrated automatic cleaning mechanisms to prevent fouling of the protective quartz sleeves. The unique absolute UV sensor, a development of bestUV, controls all UV lamps continuously and provides a UV signal to the local and central PLCs.

Both controlled by individual PLCs with local read-out of UV dose (mJ/cm2) and UV intensity (W/m2) as well as actual status of the UV systems.

Since the start-up, in August 2010 (over 12.000 hours ago) the UV lamps are not replaced and still provide sufficient UV dose to the drinking water.

Comparison of lamp technologies for public pools

A comparison between the two UV lamp technologies: low- and medium pressure (LP and MP) for use in swimming pools is available now.  The differences in reduction of chloramines (mono-, di-, and trichloramine) and microorganisms are described with references to scientific reports.

The document is written by the ‘experts in ultraviolet light’ especially for operators to help in selection of the best lamp technology available for pool water treatment.
